Raku Ceramics

Raku Ceramic Horse by award winning local artist

About Raku:  Raku ceramic pottery is a Japanese technique used since the 16 th century.  The word "raku" means happiness by chance, and it is truly by chance that beautiful art pieces are created as nearly 50% do not survive the difficult process.  After sculpting the piece to its desired shape from clay, it is fired and enamelled with oxides.  It is then fired a second time at extremely high heat.  The red hot piece of ceramic is taken out of the kiln and placed in a large metal container filled with shredded newspaper.  As the paper burns, thermic shock causes cracks to form in the enamel. The piece is then put in water to set the design.  The passage from heat to air determines the type, quantity and size of the cracks and the tone of the colours, but all have the distinctive metallic glaze unique to the Raku method.

About the artist: We are honored to offer a stunning selection of Raku items from our local artist.  Working in the method for over 8 years, she has won numerous juried competitions.
